Origins of Vastu Purush : Mythological Perspective

The mythology behind Vastu Shastra revolves around a cosmic being known as Vastu Purusha. The story of Vastu is known to have its roots in Indian mythology. The origins of Vastu Shastra can be traced back to ancient texts like the Vedas and there are two main versions of the myth behind the birth of Vastu Purusha.

Version 1: Brahma’s Vision Realized, from experiment to order

Creation of Vastu Purush: 

According to the legend lord Brahma, the creator god in Hinduism, was experimenting with the formation of life in the universe. He created a powerful being called Vastu Purusha, formed from the five elements – earth, water, fire, air, and space.

Uncontrolled Growth of Vastu Purush:

However, Vastu Purusha had an insatiable appetite and grew uncontrollably. He began consuming everything in his path, causing chaos and threatening the universe’s balance.

Subduing Vastu Purush:

The gods panicked and pleaded with Brahma to stop the destruction. Brahma, realizing his mistake, called upon the Ashta Dikpalas, the guardians of the eight cardinal directions, and other deities to subdue Vastu Purusha. After a great struggle, they managed to pin Vastu Purusha down onto the earth, with his head facing northeast and his feet facing southwest.

Pacification of Vastu Purush:

Lord Brahma acknowledged Vastu Purusha’s power and pacified him. Also promising him that he would be revered and worshipped by humans who will built their dwellings according to the principles of Vastu Shastra. He suggested that humans who build their dwellings following Vastu Shastra principles would honor him. In return, Vastu Purusha would bless them with prosperity and well-being.

Version 2: Sweat of Lord Shiva, order from chaos

This version is less common but adds a different twist:

Tranformed to Vastu Purush:

During a fierce battle between Lord Shiva and the demon Andhakasura. From the intensity of the duel, sweat droplets emerged from Lord Shiva’s powerful form. These divine droplets fell to the earth and transformed into a magnificent being known as Vastu Purusha.

Confusion about Vastu Purush:

Both gods and demons mistook Vastu Purusha for their opponent due to his immense power. A struggle ensued as both sides attempted to control this colossal entity. They attempted to control him, ultimately pinning him down on the earth.

A Promise of Respect to Vastu Purush:

Brahma, with his profound wisdom, recognizing the immense potential within Vastu Purusha. He understood that Vastu Purusha possessed the power to restore balance and harmony. Hence promised respect and appeasement through the principles of Vastu Shastra in exchange for Vastu Purusha’s blessings for those who follow them.

While the mythology behind Vastu Shastra is fascinating, it’s important to note that the principles themselves are based on ancient wisdom and practical observation of nature. Both versions highlight the immense power of Vastu Purusha and the importance of appeasing him for a harmonious and prosperous life.
