The world has faced numerous epidemics and pandemics in each turn of the century. The threat of coronavirus disease or covid-19 has brought the entire world to a standstill. The virus has a zoonotic origin. It is a viral infection caused by a novel coronavirus sars-cov-2 or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Numerous measures have been implemented in many countries to reduce the outbreak and well as person-to-person virus transmission. The focus of prevention is more on the susceptible population of older people, children, healthcare providers, and of all those people who have to leave their house to go to work.
The question arises as to whether the safety measures practiced are sufficient? The golden rule for any disease is “It is better to stop something bad from happening than it is to deal with it after it has happened”. It is therefore highly relevant to be aware of the preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus effectively.
Like much of the world I am sheltering at my place because of covid-19. But some of our super Hero’s and Heroine’s don’t have a choice but go to work to keep the country running. Hence let’s discuss some preventive measures to be practiced by the individuals to avoid the risk factors, which will be useful in curbing the spread of covid viral infection.
One should consciously be aware of touching specific parts of the face like eyes, nose, and mouth without washing the hands. Also teach kids and older people to doing the same as these are entry points for the virus. Washing hands for 20 seconds is scientifically shown to effectively kill germs. Simply remember to lather, scrub and rinse but making sure to cover front and back of the hand including the finger gaps and the nails.
One may find themselves in a situation where they might not have an option to wash their hands. In such circumstances it is recommended to use hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizers also know as hand rub comes in gel or liquid form. For a hand sanitizer to effectively kill germs apply enough product into the palm of your hands rub it all over the surface of your hands until it drys on your hand.
As of now there is no hard and fast rule or emphasis on regular people wearing gloves to protect themselves from coming in contact with covid-19. Hence it will be a personal choice for one to make if you want to wear a hand glove. If you choose to wear a hand glove weather reusable or disposable what is important is you remove the glove the right way. Which is when you peel the glove let it fold inside out so you don’t touch the surface.
Disinfecting and cleaning the usual high touched or highly accessed surfaces in and around the house is a good practice to lower the risk of infection. Some of the high touched surfaces if disinfected regularly will be helpful are door handles, door bells, home entrance, bathroom, toilets, keys, mobile phones and so on.
Face mask have gained intense attention in a form of debate during COVID-19 pandemic. Due to which recommendations about masks can be confusing, since all masks are not made the same way. There are different types of masks for example:
It’s said any mask that fits properly on the face with a reasonably thick surface will help prevents viral spread effectively. Studies have shown wearing mask might help people from either protect themselves from the virus or unknowingly passing along the virus. As much as we speak about the importance of wearing a mask it is equally important to wear the mask right. Whichever mask you choose to wear make sure you nose and mount is well covered for it to be effective. If you think you can pull off, you can go for one of those face shield to go over your mast for that second layer of protection.
It is said “Cleanliness next to godliness”. If you had to be out for work or something undeniable important, at the end you will return home. Make sure to take necessary precautions to avoid contaminating your home. To protect the ones at home remove your protective mask, gloves and eye-wear carefully and discard them or at least clean them thoroughly. Be sure to clean yourself up thoroughly. It may seem like an exhausting process will soon become a routine. Hygiene will be the new rule rather than an option.
With all being said one needs to remember the wise words “Prevention is better than cure”. Until we have a vaccine to make us immune against this virus no precaution is going to be full proof. Hence the most wise things to do is:
- Avoid going out unless it is necessary.
- Maintain social distancing and avoid being in any crowded places.
- Make sure you along with the people around you follow good respiratory hygiene.
- Keep up to date on the latest information from trusted sources only.
